Sarah Michelle Gellar grew up in Upper-East
New York City with her mother, a divorced schoolteacher. Sarah's career
was initiated when she was in her late 3 years of age. Here, she was
discovered by an agent while dining with her mother at a local restaurant.
Within three weeks, she was on the set of her first film entitled
An Invasion of Privacy. Her first commercial created a lawsuit entitled
"The Battle of Burgers," which was a trial between McDonald's
and Burger King (the lawsuit was settled in 1982). Afterwards, she
was in a multitude of commercials (advancing past 100) and was introduced
to larger roles. Such roles included Over the Brooklyn Bridge (1984),
Funny Farm (1988), High Stakes (1989), TV Series Spencer: For Higher
(1986), and acted in a Circle in a the Square production of Horton
Foote's The Widow Claire. Within these years, she attended a famous
New York High School, Professional Children's High School. She also
excelled as a competitive figure skater.
At the age of 14, Sarah's career was growing exponentially. This
led to her first stand-out role, portrayal as Jacqueline Bouvier in
the 1991 NBC mini-series, A Woman Named Jackie. In 1992, she found
another lead role as Sydney Rutledge in a syndicated series called
Swan's Crossing and a role as Molly in Neil Simon's Broadway production,
Jake's Women. February 24th, 1993 was a big year for Sarah, providing
her with an adult role on the daytime drama All My Children (AMC).
Sarah played as the ultimate villain in AMC, leading her to the winner
of an Emmy for Outstanding Younger Actress in 1994. Sarah abandoned
the set of AMC to move to California to seek new fame in films and
TV.
In 1996, Sarah found her new fame by becoming the lead role as Buffy
Summers in the new television action series Buffy the Vampire Slayer
(BtVS). BtVS was based on creator Joss Whedon's script of the 1992
movie of the same title, finishing where the movie left off. BtVS's
second season became WB's the highest ranking offering, offering not
only WB favored status, but providing Sarah with big-screen options.
BtVS is now nearing the premiere of it's 3rd season, starting in late
September.
Being skilled in her area, Sarah has been in two popular 1997 thrillers:
a beauty queen in distress with her friends in I Know What You Did
Last Summer and a sorority girl meeting her terrifying demise in Wes
Craven's sequel to the 1996 popular horror film, Scream 2. Sarah has
also starred as a voice of the "Gwendy" doll appearing in
the 1998 movie, Small Soldiers. Sarah has also starred in two movies
which are to be released in 1999: Cruel Intentions and Simply Irresistible.
Cruel Intentions is an updated retelling of Dangerous Liaisons set
in suburban Connecticut and Simply Irresistible is about a department
store executive who tries to resist falling in love with a young woman
(Gellar) because he believes she has possessed magical powers after
inheriting a restaurant from her father.
