Ten years, fourteen number one hits, one-hundred
and twenty million records with one woman's face on them all. That
face belongs to Mariah Carey, the best selling and recording artist
of the nineties. This is only one of Mariah Careys claim to
fame! Mariah Carey sky scraped onto the musical charts right out of
high school with a number one single Vision Of Love from her debut
which then was followed by three other number one hits from her first
release. Mariah Carey has done more in ten years than most singers
will come close to doing in a lifetime.
Carey was born to ahalf-Venezuelan, half-black father and an Irish
mother. As you might imagine, the family faced a fair amount of prejudice
due to its mixed heritage. Mother Patricia, an opera singer and vocal
coach, was disowned by her family when she married Alfred Roy Carey,
an aeronautical engineer. Over the years, the couple had various atrocities
waged against them by bigots, including having their cars blown up
and their dogs poisoned. The marriage crumbled under the strain of
such malicious events, and the couple divorced when Mariah was three
years old. Mariah's older sister moved in with their father, and her
older brother was soon off to college, leaving just Mariah at home
with a mother who struggled to make ends meet.
Mariah's full name is Mariah Carey, she has no middle name. Her first
name was taken from the musical, Paint Your Wagon.
Mariah wanted to be a singer from a very young age, and only days
after graduating from Harborfields High School she left home for New
York City. After a time working odd jobs and singing back-up for Brenda
K. Starr, she met Tommy Mottola, then president of CBS Records, and
her future husband at an industry party. Days later, in 1988, she
was signed, and her first album was released in 1990.
Mariah has been taking acting lessons for some time and will be appearing
in The Bachelor with Chris O'Donnell next year. She also has committed
to a movie called 00-Soul with Chris Tucker and will produce and star
in All That Glitters for Disney.
Mariah has not dated Puff Daddy, Donald Trump or Leonardo DiCaprio.
In fact, the only person she has seen regularly since her divorce
was Derek Jeter, from whom she has since split.
Mariah mentioned that she has a skin disorder called dermografia
in Self Magazine, but later said that it was blown out of proportion.
She later clarified on Access Hollywood that the condition is similar
to hives.Mariah
